Eliza Ann Wins the Tour de Turtles
For the past three months, we have anxiously tracked and watched as Eliza Ann, Waterline’s sponsored loggerhead turtle, competed in the Sea Turtle Conservancy’s Tour de Turtles 2017. To refresh you on Eliza Ann’s journey, click here.
The results are in and…drum roll please…Eliza Ann has been crowned winner of the Tour de Turtles, Hardshell group! She also came in second place for the People’s Choice Award. You go Eliza Ann!
Eliza Ann started her official journey in the Tour de Turtles on August 1st, 2017. Waterline’s very own sea turtle out swam 20 turtles for a total of 1,693 miles. To put that into perspective, that is the equivalent of swimming from Tampa, Florida to New York City. Needless to say, this mother to be has been on the go. Check out the map below to chart her extraordinary journey!
Eliza Ann gave scientists an insight on turtle migration behaviors and patterns as she kicked butt during the race. We were able to watch Eliza Ann through her Platform Terminal Transmitter that has been adhered to her shell since June 20, 2017. Eliza Ann swam to raise awareness of light pollution on Anna Maria Island in hopes of educating residents and guests and giving baby turtles a better chance of following the moonlight into the ocean rather than your hotel light into the lobby.
From the volunteers with Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch & Shorebird Monitoring that helped to find Eliza Ann and tag her, to the dedicated scientists and volunteers at the Sea Turtle Conservancy; Waterline Marina Resort would like to thank you on behalf of Eliza Ann and all the sea turtles that this invaluable information will help!
