Island Conservation Partners Sponsoring Female Loggerhead in Annual Migration “Marathon”
Who: Waterline Marina Resort, Bortell’s Lounge and Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch & Shorebird Monitoring (AMITW)
What: Waterline Marina Resort, along with community partners AMI Turtle Watch & Shorebird Monitoring and Bortell’s Lounge, is co-sponsoring “Bortie” – a nesting female turtle – for the 11th Annual Tour de Turtles! Created by the Sea Turtle Conservancy, the annual “marathon” event uses satellite telemetry to track the migration of turtles released from beaches in Costa Rica, Panama, Nevis, Anna Maria Island and other parts of Florida. The turtle that travels the most miles over the three-month period will be announced as the winner of this year’s marathon. This year’s race begins August 1.
Last year, Waterline Marina Resort tagged and released a nesting female loggerhead sea turtle – Eliza Ann – in the 10th Annual Tour de Turtles who won first place in the race and second place in “People’s Choice.” You can see her story here!
When: On Tuesday, June 19 the public and Waterline guests will have the opportunity to be a part of the “Bon Voyage Bortie” sendoff celebration. Official tagging of Bortie will begin at 6:00 a.m. and the actual release will happen at 8:30 a.m. (date and time subject to change depending on weather and the nesting female). The sendoff will take place directly on Coquina Beach (location on the beach is still TBD). Spectators are encouraged to use the hashtag #BetOnBortie when sharing their photos and videos on social.
